In the Caribbean, sustainable development is a new opportunity amongst countries for healthy and reliable food. Locally and regionally, many have started kitchen gardens or organic indoor growing to avoid purchasing GMOs. Genetically modified foods (GMOs) have been shown to increase the risk for heart disease and other conditions. Organic foods are lower in nitrate levels, higher in magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and vitamin C and, organic farming contributes to improved environmental and human health.
Highlighting this new path in the Dominican Republic which has the largest area of organic agricultural land. It has started integration efforts on organic agriculture. Organic farming excludes synthetic fertilizers which include growth regulators for crops, biocides, and additives for livestock, such as growth hormones and antibiotics. Currently, organic agriculture is being promoted in the region as a way to include biodiversity, enhance agro-ecosystems and soil biological activity by being a climate-smart option in light of climate change.
