Background

The IS Trinidad Office in collaboration with the Greater Caribbean Safeguarding Initiative (GCSI), and the University of the West Indies Trinidad, hosted the Old World Bollworm Training, at the University of the West Indies from Sept 12th – 14th, 2017.

The 3 day workshop was facilitated by Dr Todd Gilligan, Taxonomist, USDA-APHIS-PPQ-S&T. Trained were 16 technicians from Trinidad, Tobago, Dominica, Barbados, Antigua, Belize, St Lucia, St Vincent, Suriname, Grenada, Guyana, St Kitts, UWI, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and USDA APHIS IS Dominica Republic.

Dr. Gilligan took the group through a rigorous agenda which included; Introduction to Lepidoptera, Heliothinae Pests and OWB, Trapping for OWB and Trap Demonstration, Field Exercise for Trapping location and set up, Collecting and processing traps, preparing moths for dissection and most importantly several hours of moth dissection practice.

 

As a follow up from this training the participants will be supplied with traps, lures and a simple reconnaissance survey to commence surveying for OWB in their countries.
