The International Day of Plant Health conceived by the United Nations is to be observed every May 12. On May 12, the International Day of Plant Health will focus on the fundamental importance of plant health, animal, human and ecosystem health. FAO Deputy Director-General, Beth Bechdol adds, ‘’It could not be more vital to make sure that we do everything we can to maximize the food resources our planet can provide.’’

The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations estimates that there are up to 40% of food crop losses caused by plant pests and diseases. Once they have established themselves, plant pests and diseases are expensive and time-consuming to manage and near impossible to eradicate. The damage these plant pests and diseases cause to agriculture have worsened the growing issue of world hunger, while also threatening rural livelihoods.

This resolution is the key to the sustainable development of agriculture that will feed growing populations by 2050. It highlights food security and nutrients; ecosystem functions and how healthy plants constitute the foundation for all life on Earth.
